Kopia Authors is an open-source collective that builds unified backup solutions for desktops and servers, uniting graphical and command-line workflows under a single engine. The project’s two editions—KopiaUI and KopiaCLI—share the same repository-level technology: block-level deduplication, incremental snapshots, client-side AES-256 or ChaCha20-Poly1305 encryption, optional zstd or s2 compression, and destination flexibility that spans local disks, NAS shares, SFTP hosts, Amazon S3, Google Cloud Storage, Azure Blob, Backblaze B2, WebDAV and any S3-compatible endpoint. KopiaUI wraps these capabilities in a cross-platform Qt desktop client that schedules policies, browses point-in-time file trees, mounts snapshots as network drives and displays deduplication ratios through interactive charts, making it suitable for photographers, designers and small offices that want set-and-forget protection with visual feedback. KopiaCLI exposes the same engine through a single static binary scriptable in PowerShell, Bash or cron, giving system administrators the power to automate site-wide backups, replicate Docker volumes, encrypt database dumps and replicate them off-site without extra licensing. Both editions support password, key-file or repository-server authentication, policy templates for hourly, daily or custom retention, and built-in maintenance tasks that reclaim unused blocks, verify integrity and re-write parity to guard against bit-rot. Repositories remain vendor-neutral, so data can be migrated across clouds or self-hosted MinIO instances without conversion. The publisher’s software is available free of charge on get.nero.com, where downloads are delivered through trusted Windows package sources such as winget, always install the latest upstream build and can be queued in bulk for simultaneous deployment.
