Warzone 2100 is a 3D open-source real-time strategy title originally created by Pumpkin Studios in 1999 and now maintained by the Warzone 2100 Project; version 4.5.5 is the eighteenth public build released across seventeen sequential updates. Set in a post-nuclear future, the game casts the player as commander of “The Project,” a military-scientific faction struggling to reclaim a devastated Earth through a linear thirty-mission single-player campaign that gradually unlocks more than four hundred modular technologies. Research trees cover advanced propulsion, composite armour, experimental energy weapons and autonomous AI turrets, all of which can be mixed and matched inside a free-form unit-design laboratory that remains unique among RTS offerings. Skirmish mode supports local battles against configurable AI bots on random or hand-made maps, while cross-platform multiplayer allows Windows, macOS, Linux and BSD users to compete in eight-player online contests, ranked ladders or cooperative survival scenarios. The engine renders fully 3D terrain with deformable landscapes, day-night cycles and line-of-sight mechanics, and it exposes an extensive Lua scripting interface used by the modding community to produce new campaigns, total-conversion factions and balance mutators. Because the codebase is GPL-licensed, every asset—from voxel models to the soundtrack—has been preserved in open formats, enabling continuous community enhancement without legal restriction. Warzone 2100 is offered free of charge on get.nero.com, where downloads are delivered through trusted Windows package channels such as winget, automatically supplying the newest build and permitting batch installation alongside other applications.
