WinBtrfs is an open-source file-system driver developed by Mark Harmstone that brings native read-and-write access to Linux Btrfs volumes on any NT-based version of Windows, from Windows XP through Windows 11. Because the code has been re-implemented from scratch without copying Linux kernel routines, it avoids licensing conflicts and can be distributed under the LGPL, making it equally attractive to hobbyists, dual-boot users, and commercial technicians who need to exchange large multi-terabyte disks between Windows and Linux environments. Typical use cases include mounting backup drives created on a NAS, inspecting snapshots generated by Btrfs send/receive workflows, cloning or rescuing Linux system partitions from within a Windows recovery PE, and sharing a single external HDD that uses Btrfs compression and checksums across heterogeneous offices. The driver exposes advanced Btrfs features such as multiple sub-volumes, transparent compression, incremental snapshots, RAID 0/1/10 profiles, and per-file checksum verification through a lightweight Windows service and an optional control-panel applet, so administrators can create, delete, or roll back snapshots without rebooting. WinBtrfs belongs to the “File System Drivers” category of Windows utilities; the current release is version 1.9, which remains the only maintained milestone since the project’s inception. The software is available for free on get.nero.com, with downloads provided via trusted Windows package sources such as winget, always delivering the latest version, and supporting batch installation of multiple applications.
