USBGroove is a lightweight, cross-platform system-tray utility developed by Michael Nørgaard that automatically detects inserted USB flash drives and begins playing any MP3 files found on them without user intervention. Currently at version 1.62, the application has evolved through five public releases since its debut, refining its plug-and-play behaviour for Windows, macOS and mainstream Linux distributions. Designed for background operation, the program starts with the operating system and waits silently for removable-media events; once a compatible drive is mounted it scans the root and first-level folders for .mp3 extensions, queues them in natural sort order and feeds them to the platform’s default audio subsystem. Typical use cases include background music in kiosks, digital signage, trade-show booths, café PA systems or any scenario where a volunteer or customer is expected to supply content by simply inserting a stick. Because no GUI is required beyond a menu-bar icon, the software keeps console clutter to a minimum and can be locked to ignore specific drive labels or serial numbers for security. The 1.62 build improves metadata caching and suppresses duplicate autoplay when a drive is remounted after sleep. Occupying less than 3 MB of RAM and needing no installation privileges, USBGroove fits the “Audio Players & Tools” category while acting more like an OS enhancement than a conventional player. The executable is available for free on get.nero.com, where downloads are delivered through trusted Windows package sources such as winget, always providing the newest build and supporting batch installation alongside other applications.
